Why Did I Get Married Too? is the first Tyler Perry movie to get an international release. And judging by the opening 10 minutes of this black opera, it may well be the last.
Any newcomer to Perry’s hall of fame - Madea... (parts one to infinity), Meet the Browns, The Family That Preys, Why Did I Get Married - need not worry about missing the first instalment from his matrimonial series, as the sequel is a carbon copy of its predecessor, albeit with more deafening tones.
Fast-forward three years and the gang is back for another group holiday/therapy session, this time swapping the rocky mountains of Colorado for the Bahamian sun. But ultimately, no amount of heat is going to weather the marital storms within their respective relationships.
Written and directed by shrewd businessman Perry, Why Did I Get Married Too? is a lazy, crude, indulgent, over-the-top production, that will have a hard time crossing over to British audiences. Although, it’ll be interesting to hear what his trusted African-American audience thought of his portrayal of the four female protagonists, who, lead by the unbearably loud Angela (Tasha Smith), do nothing to abolish stereotypical perceptions of African-American women.
Tyler Perry at his worst. Uneven, piercing and improbable, this sequel is only good for a few laughs – for all the wrong reasons.
